Gem Añonuevo is a 23-year-old multimedia artist based in the Philippines. As a freelance graphic designer/video editor, she has worked with the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), CCP Arts Education Department, Tanghalang Pilipino, and Philippine Folk Dance Society (PFDS) to name a few.

Most recently, she designed Indak TA[Y]O: Dances of the Philippine Islands, Vol. 2, a book published by the CCP and PFDS. The book was launched during the premiere of Tara, Laro TA[Y]O where she served as the graphic artist and video editor for promotions, following her successful contributions to the series in the past two years.

Currently, she works as a freelance video editor for Studio Who, a company focused on documentary filmmaking. In her spare time, Gem likes to paint, sketch, and crochet pieces that she would give out as gifts for her loved ones.

TA[Y]O is a multifaceted project documenting Philippine folk and indigenous dances through dance notations, workshops, and film production.

On its third run, the Cultural Center of the Philippines, in collaboration with the Philippine Folk Dance Society and the San Jose Del Monte LGU, launched Tara, Laro TA[Y]O which features old traditional Filipino games.

Interpreting the director’s vision, I singlehandedly conceptualized, designed and executed all the graphics and video teasers for the premiere and its promotions.

presented are the following: main poster, flashdrive design, social media pubmat templates, souvenir program (booklet), film posters as tarpaulin standees, and slide deck

Indak TA[Y]O was launched by the Cultural Center of the Philippines and Philippine Folk Dance Society to document and annotate unpublished dances from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Visual concept and execution by Gem Añonuevo

Continuing the TA[Y]O project, CCP produced films featuring courtship, wedding, and romantic dances from different Philppine regions in TA[Y]0ng Dalawa: Indak sa Saliw ng Pusong Umiibig (2023).

Months after the premiere, Tech-Talk TA[Y]O was held. A workshop/seminar event discussing the ways we can utilize new media to promote and revive Filipino culture, traditions, and dances.

In line with the goal of the two events, Tuloy TA[Y]O was launched online, using TikTok as a platform to share the TA[Y]Ong Dalawa Instructional Videos and Dance Films, with additional short documentaries

The designs I created for the promotions were patterned from TA[Y]O 2022, which featured silhouettes of different people from around the country showcasing both individuality and unity. For 2023, the concept was refashioned to show romance, thus the use of warm colors and sleek fonts.

STRATEGY IN MIND

The goal is to encourage people to support local and buy local by seeing the value of Uswag Leyte. What the artisans and the target market have in common is that they have these products to hold personal narratives. Uswag Leyte products hold stories and inspired moments of its craftsmen the same way it is bought as souvenirs – a reminder of an adventure, an emotion, a memory. Thus, the brand will be promoted as something tourists and crafts enthusiast can resonate with. We also aim to highlight how the products are not merely manufactured for selling’s sake but to communicate Leyte's art, their story, and their culture. Having to reinvent a tradition to adapt to the contemporary industry is a progressive way to preserve heritage. Allowing the audience to understand this, they become more enticed as they know that they would be supporting a good cause.

Duplo: You can always afford to give your child the world.

Who wouldn’t want to give their child the world? And why hesitate on spending for it when all it costs is just “a set of playing bricks”.

Kids ages 2-5 years are already starting to make sense of their surroundings and with their imagination, might even build their own little world. With parents as the target market, this ad encourages the audience to embrace a child’s active imagination and inventiveness, and support them with Lego Duplo bricks.

My undergraduate thesis under the Book Illustration Category for the UST College of Fine Arts and Design is entitled “Re-illustrating Sarimanok Vs. Ibong Adarna by Nick Joaquin with Mixed Media”.

The study seeks to innovate and effectively use mixed media by using each medium to its advantage, making the most out of the technological advancements we now enjoy, all while staying rooted to the fundamentals of art and design

I made use of digital collage to render the illustrations, utilizing photographed found objects and a combination of traditional and digital painting.
